Short Review: The Angels Share

Director: Ken Loach
(2012)

The Angels Share, the latest film from Ken Loach, is a bit mellow for its own good at times, despite its initial depiction of new dad Robbie (Paul Brannigan). After narrowly avoiding a prison sentence, he spends the majority of the first 3rd of the film trying to escape his thuggish past. While he isn’t initially likable (we witness through flashback the vicious beating of a fellow teenager) he grows on us as he connects with other youths stuck on community service. His growing friendship with probation worker Harry (John Henshaw) leads him to discover his love for whiskey, and a plan to heist of a rare cask of the golden liquid to aid his families escape to a better life. The film remains decent throughout, but ends far too positively in contrast to its initial thematic bleakness.
