Short review: Elf

Director: John Favreau
(2003)
From director John Favreau comes Elf, a Will Ferrell starring comedy about a man who thinks he’s an elf, leaving the Santa’s workshop in the North Pole to search for his real father in New York. And while Christmas and the big apple seem like an intoxicating and wonderful combination, Elf falls flat for the majority of its short running time. Farrell tries hard to make the humour work, but the script simply lacks any charm beyond its fish out of water premise. James Caan and Zooey Deschanel co star as the titular elf’s father and/co-worker, but don’t give performances that represent the performances that they're both capable of doing. This mediocrity continues until the finale, which puts Christmas charm and spirit to the forefront for the first time, and the results are fantastic. It’s a shame that it’s too little to late.
