Episode 6, Hounded, is another attempt at
building tension towards an inevitable mid season climax. This episode isn’t
really lead by anyone, but spends its time cutting between rick at the prison,
Merle on his hunt for Michonne and Andrea’s interactions with The Governor. Hounded
isn’t a bad episode, but feels like its laying the groundwork for something
much grander for the coming weeks.
After the mysterious phone call at the end
of episode 5, Rick waits anxiously for more calls with survivors who can
promise safe shelter for the group. He’s still taking the events of Lori’s
death badly, interacting little with the rest of the group. The hunt between
Michonne and Merle is interesting, climaxing with an enjoyable, but all too
short 3 way brawl. Andrea and The Governor become closer, as Laurie Holden’s
character remains as short sighted and annoying as ever. Now Carl is competent
and Lori is dead, the majority of hate will surely shift to her, the resentment
is deserved in many ways.
The final shot of this episode gives a
small degree of payoff, a promise that something big is being geared up for
episode 8. Mid season has to be something special or season 3 looks destined
for a repeat of season 2’s stagnation. I'm sure it the crew can pull it off.
