Walk with Me is the episode that gives fans
what they have waited for since the reveal of Michonne at the end of season 2. Our
samurai sword wielding protagonist has teamed up with Andrea (Laurie Holden)
all winter, and here the duo have been given an episode all to themselves to
show how their characters have developed.
Despite this focus, our heroines aren’t actually
the stars of this episode. That title goes to David Morrissey’s ‘The Governor’,
a character who begins the episode showing good intentions, but it’s clear he’s
more sinister than his initial appearance. In fact, Michonne is a relatively
undeveloped character, almost intentionally it seems. Andrea knows nothing
about her despite sharing each other’s company for months, and as an audience
we’re also kept in the dark.
After being ‘rescued from a forest clearing
by The Governor and his group (including Merle!) the girls are taken to
Woodbury, a walled in community that is free of walkers. Andrea laps up the
fresh food and warm showers, but Michonne doesn’t trust the setup that The
Governor has for himself here. Through great acting from Morrissey and some
subtle yet revealing camerawork, The Governor’s sinister roots come to the
surface with a brutal action scene and a speech to his people which has more
than a hint of tyranny in it.
We get
an ending that poses more questions than answers about our new characters and
the town of Woodbury, and the answers are hanging so tantalisingly in front of
us the thrill of discovering them will be incredible. With Lori’s impending
pregnancy and Michonne’s desire to leave Woodbury, the next 4 or so episodes
must move at a fair pace or introduce new story arcs, or the search for Sofia
in Season 2 could seem minute in comparison
